An exchange was responsible for connecting two telephone lines together depending on what number you dialed, in some cases this would be accomplished by two or more exchanges communicating together in case the two lines were in a different neighborhood or city. There were several types of exchanges, local exchanges, long distance exchanges. Some were automatic and some were partially or all together controlled by operators.
